Today’s Date is 6/6/6

If you are superstitious today has probably been a bad day for you. Today’s date is 6/6/6. Oh, it’s the mark of the beast! It’s the end times! For us rational people we know that it’s simply June 6, 2006. I decided to get to be bottom of the fear of the three little digits: 666. According to Wikipedia, there is actually a name for this phobia, Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia. We can blame this superstition on the holey bible. It comes from Revelation chapter 13 verses 16-18. Here are the verses:

  • Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell who does not have the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom: let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number. Its number is six threescore six.

Some interpretations of those verses says that 666 is linked to Satan or the Anti-Christ. Other scholars say that the number represents the Roman Emperor Nero. Today in Holland christians are having a 24 hour prayer vigil to ward off evil spirits simply because of the today’s date. I have found it very funny to see people freak out over the number. When I was a cashier in high school, if someone’s amount to pay was $6.66 they would often buy something else to avoid the unlucky number. In my opinion superstitions can be quite humorous. I have never been superstitious. I think that’s just part of being an atheist. There is no reason to get bent out of shape over a number. Have a great day.
